However, the heavy use of coconut milk, deep-fried pork, and oily stir-fries can take a toll on our digestive systems. For many people in Thailand, these dietary habits can increase the risk of developing gallstones—hardened deposits of digestive fluid that form in the gallbladder. While many people live with them without issues, they can suddenly become a serious health problem.

Gallstones often remain silent for years, causing no symptoms at all. But when a stone blocks a duct, the pain can be severe and sudden. Ignoring the early warning signs can lead to complications such as inflammation, infection, or damage to the liver and pancreas.

Because symptoms often mimic other common issues like indigestion or acid reflux—conditions many of us experience after a heavy meal of Som Tum and sticky rice—it is easy to dismiss them. However, distinct patterns often emerge that suggest your gallbladder is the true source of the problem.

Sudden and Intense Pain

The most common symptom is pain in the upper right part of your abdomen. This isn’t a dull ache; it typically arrives suddenly and intensifies quickly. The pain might spread to your right shoulder or between your shoulder blades. Attacks often happen after eating a high-fat meal, which forces the gallbladder to contract. In Thailand, where fried foods and fatty meats are staples, these attacks can be frequent for sufferers. The pain can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.

Nausea and Vomiting

Digestive distress frequently accompanies gallbladder pain. You might feel nauseous or vomit during an attack. While it is easy to mistake this for food poisoning—especially in a hot climate where food spoilage is a risk—chronic nausea after fatty meals is a strong indicator of gallbladder dysfunction. If you find yourself frequently feeling sick after dinner, it is worth consulting a medical professional.

Jaundice and Other Visible Signs

If a gallstone completely blocks the common bile duct, bile cannot flow into the intestine and instead builds up in the blood. This leads to jaundice, causing your skin and the whites of your eyes to turn yellow. You might also notice your urine becoming very dark, like the colour of tea, while your stools become pale or clay-coloured. These are serious signs that require immediate medical attention at a hospital.

Fever and Chills

A high temperature accompanied by chills or shivering suggests that the gallbladder or bile ducts have become infected. This condition, known as cholecystitis, is a medical emergency. In a tropical environment, fevers are often attributed to viruses like dengue or flu, but if the fever comes with abdominal pain, do not delay in getting help.

Understanding these signs allows you to act quickly. While dietary changes—such as reducing fried foods and coconut milk intake—can help manage risks, professional diagnosis is essential for long-term health.
